Hummus is a creamy spread known throughout the world since ancient times, which was part of the Middle Eastern diet. The main ingredient of hummus is chickpeas (hummus = chickpea in Arabic).
Essentially, it is a spread made from chickpeas, garlic, squeezed lemon, a little olive oil, salt, and tahini. It is a suitable choice for a vegetarian diet and can replace mayonnaise in its various forms.
How can I use hummus?
Hummus, beyond the basic recipe, can have various variations with spices and products of our liking. We can enjoy it:
- As a dip on crackers or toast or pita bread or spread on bread
- For various healthy dressings for salads and meals
- In various sandwiches, e.g. a sandwich with tuna and vegetables or chicken with vegetables, instead of sauce or mayonnaise we can add a little hummus
- In tortillas as a sauce, e.g. tortillas with falafel with a little hummus, avocado and vegetables
- Like a snack spread for young and old
Below I suggest a quick avocado hummus recipe that we can use in various meals, e.g. breakfast, snacks, lunch, etc.
