Body fat measurement is a procedure through which we can better assess each client’s body profile. Body Composition Analysis (body fat measurement) is carried out with the Tanita MC-780, a multi-frequency analyser of total and segmental body composition, with high accuracy and repeatability.
Body Composition Analysis
With a multi-frequency Tanita MC-780 body fat analyser
Through the Tanita MC-780 a segmental analysis is made of body fat (%, kg), visceral fat, fat-free mass, muscle mass, bone mass, total body water (extracellular – intracellular water), body mass index (BMI), an estimate of basal metabolism and body age, phase angle, distribution of body fat and muscle mass (segmental analysis for each arm, leg and the trunk), and more.
Phase angle is a very important parameter for assessing the client’s state of health, as well as the nutritional state of their cells. Body composition analysis together with phase angle is valuable, as it provides important information about the general condition of the body.
The body fat measurement procedure is very simple and quick. The person being measured steps onto the Tanita MC-780 barefoot and holds the special hand grips. An imperceptible, low-intensity current passes through the body for a few seconds via 8 different electrodes (two on each limb), and we immediately have all the results in detail.

What the body fat measurement printout includes
- Body analysis (1 page): body fat (% and kg), visceral fat, weight and BMI, fat-free, muscle and bone mass, body water (total, extracellular, intracellular), phase angle, metabolic age and basal metabolism. Each value is shown on a colour scale, so you can see immediately whether it is low, normal or high.
- Detailed Tanita PRO report (2 pages): comparison of each value with the desirable range for you, body type rating (relationship between fat and muscle mass), segmental analysis of muscle mass and fat in the arms, legs and trunk, muscle balance between right–left and upper–lower body, and fat distribution in relation to age.
- Progress of values (2 pages, at repeat measurements): charts showing the course of fat, visceral fat, weight, BMI, muscle mass and water from one measurement to the next, along with how much each one changed.
Your dietitian explains the results and uses them in designing your programme.
However, for the body fat measurement to be accurate, before the measurement we should:
- Have fasted for at least 3 hours
- Not have drunk coffee or alcohol
- Not have done intense exercise in the last 3 hours
- Have drunk water normally the previous day (good hydration) and have emptied the bladder before the measurement
- Clothing should be light and, if possible, similar each time the measurement is repeated. Repeat measurements are best done at about the same time of day.
- The measurement should not be carried out during menstruation
When body fat measurement is not performed
- In people with a pacemaker or other implanted electronic medical device (e.g. a defibrillator)
- During pregnancy (only weighing can be done)
