A three-day detox is something we usually need after holidays, vacations or a week with lots of meals out. It is not a «cleanse» with juices or fasting. It is 3 days of reset with real food: more vegetables, pulses, fish and water, and less salt, sugar and alcohol. Below you will find the rules, a fresh autumn menu for 3 days and the shopping list.
What «detox» means in practice
| What we hear | What is true |
|---|---|
| «A detox diet removes toxins» | The body has its own detoxification system: liver, kidneys, gut, lungs and skin. A review of popular detox diets found no reliable evidence that they remove toxins. |
| «You only need juices» | Juice-only programmes have little protein and leave you hungry. Whole fruit and vegetables also provide fibre. |
| «I lose weight in 3 days» | The scales may drop, mainly because of fluids and less salt. Fat is lost with a steady programme, not in 3 days. |
| What you really gain | A lighter feeling, better hydration and, above all, a «reset» of your habits so you can carry on properly. |
The 5 rules for the three-day detox
| Rule | How to apply it |
|---|---|
| 1. Half a plate of vegetables | At lunch and dinner, salad or cooked vegetables take up half the plate. |
| 2. Protein at every meal | Yoghurt, eggs, pulses, fish or chicken, so you do not get hungry. |
| 3. Less salt | Herbs, lemon and spices instead of salt. The World Health Organization recommends up to 5 g of salt a day for adults. |
| 4. No alcohol or soft drinks | Water, Greek mountain tea, chamomile or green tea. |
| 5. No ready-made foods | We avoid cold cuts, crisps, sweets and fast food. We cook simply. |

After the three days: how to continue
The value of a detox meal plan shows on day 4. Keep the 3 easiest things you did, for example half a plate of vegetables, water with every meal and a home-cooked lunch, and continue with the weekly menu, which is updated every week.
Who should talk to a doctor or dietitian first
- Pregnant and breastfeeding women

Frequently asked questions
How many kilos do I lose with a three-day detox?
The scales may show a little less, mainly because of fluids. Do not base your goal on this. See the three days as a start.
Do I need juices or special teas?
No. For the three-day detox, whole fruit, vegetables, water and plain tea are enough.
I am hungry. What do I do?
Add vegetables or a little more protein to the meal. The programme is not a fast.
How often can I do a 3-day detox diet?
Whenever you feel you need a «reset», e.g. after holidays. Ideally, though, you should not need it often, because your everyday diet is already doing the job.
